Botulinum toxin injections are used to improve facial aesthetics by smoothing hyper dynamic wrinkles on the face and neck. It works by blocking release of acetylcholine from the motor neurons to the neuromuscular junction thus "relaxing" the treated muscles and in this way smoothens wrinkles and lines.
Partly wrinkles and lines are a result of repeated contraction of muscles especially periocular, forehead wrinkles and glabellar lines. Other lines that can be treated are on the nose, neck and many more.
BTX-A is used to lift and shape the brow.
It’s effect stays between 3-5 months and when used repetitively over years it prevents lines and wrinkles and also structural changes in the periorbital area.
In some areas BTX-A is used in conjunction with a filler to improve the cosmetic result and the longevity of the effect (especially in the lower face). In other cases it can be used together with a laser on another energy based device for improved cosmetic results following skin resurfacing. It can also be used to treat masseter hypertrophy and smoothen the form of the face and on the chin to improve the mental crease and chin wrinkling.
Other indications are hyperhidrosis – especially in the armpits and migraine.
The procedure is easy to perform by tiny injections. If performed correctly side effects are negligible and can mostly be avoided. No long-term or systemic effects have been reported.
